Getting Started

How do I get started with Irkless?

Just sign up at our website. No credit card needed for the 30-day trial.

Once you're in:

  1. Start capturing stuff in your Inbox (press N or Space from anywhere to quick-add)
  2. Process your Inbox when you're ready—turn items into tasks, projects, or trash them
  3. Check out the Today view to see what's up for today

Don't overthink it. Just start dumping stuff in the Inbox and you'll figure it out as you go.

Do I need to know GTD to use Irkless?

Nope! Irkless is inspired by GTD, but you don't need to be a GTD expert (or even have read the book).

The basic idea is simple:

  • Inbox: Where everything goes first
  • Today: What you're working on right now
  • Projects: Multi-step outcomes you're working toward
  • Areas: Life domains (work, health, family, etc.)

If you want to go deeper into GTD, the structure supports it. If not, it still works as a straightforward task manager.

Can I import my tasks from another app?

You can import from an Irkless export, which makes it easy to move between accounts or restore from a backup.

Import from other apps (Todoist, Things, OmniFocus, etc.) isn't available yet, but it's on the roadmap.

What are all the different views/lists?

Irkless has several built-in GTD views:

  • Today: Tasks scheduled for today or due today
  • Inbox: Where new items land before you process them
  • Upcoming: Tasks with future dates
  • Anytime: Tasks available to work on whenever
  • Someday: "Maybe later" items you don't want cluttering your active lists
  • Waiting For: Tasks blocked on someone else
  • Delegated: Tasks you've handed off to others

Plus you can browse by Tags, Areas, Projects, and Collections.

Billing & Subscription

Why isn't there a free tier?

We'd rather have a thousand paying users we can properly support than a hundred thousand mostly-free users we can't. A free tier changes what you optimise for—and we want to optimise for the product, not conversion funnels.

Instead, we offer a generous 30-day trial with no credit card required. That's enough time to really use Irkless and decide if it's for you.

At $6/month, it costs less than a coffee.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yep. No contracts, no hassle. Cancel from your account settings.

You'll keep access until the end of your billing period, and you can export all your data before you go. No hard feelings.

Do you offer student or nonprofit discounts?

Not yet, but we're working on it. We're a tiny team and setting up verification systems takes time.

If you're a student or work for a nonprofit and $6/month is genuinely a hardship, email us at hello@irkless.com. We're human—we'll figure something out.

Will the price ever increase?

Maybe eventually. But if you subscribe now, your rate is locked in forever.

We grandfather existing users. No bait-and-switch. If you sign up at $6/month, that's your rate for as long as you stay subscribed.

Is there a referral program?

Yes! Check the Referrals section in Settings. Share your link and earn free months when friends sign up. Refer enough people and you can earn a lifetime free membership.

Tasks & Projects

Can I create subtasks?

Not yet—subtasks are on the roadmap for a near-future release. For now, you can use checklists within task notes to break work down into smaller steps.

Can I add notes to tasks?

Yes! Every task has a notes field that supports Markdown formatting. You can add detailed descriptions, checklists, links, and more.

Tasks with notes show a small icon indicator so you know there's more detail available.

Does Irkless have recurring tasks?

Yes! You can set tasks to repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or on custom schedules.

Recurring tasks work the GTD way—they don't clutter your Today view until they're actually due. Once you complete one, the next occurrence automatically shows up when it's time.

How do due dates work?

You can set a due date on any task. Tasks with dates show up in:

  • Today: If due today or scheduled for today
  • Upcoming: If due in the future

Overdue tasks are highlighted so you don't miss them. You can filter any view to show only overdue items.

What's the difference between Projects and Areas?

Projects have an end goal—they're things you're working toward that can be completed. "Plan birthday party", "Launch website", "Move to new apartment".

Areas are ongoing responsibilities with no end date. "Health", "Work", "Family", "Finances". They're buckets for organizing projects and standalone tasks.

Projects live inside Areas. So you might have a "Family" area containing a "Plan summer vacation" project.

How do I mark tasks as important?

You can flag tasks to mark them as high priority. Flagged tasks show a visual indicator and you can filter any view to show only flagged items.

Use the flag button on a task or the keyboard shortcut to toggle it.

What's partial completion?

Cmd+Click (or Ctrl+Click) on a task's checkbox to mark it partially complete. This is perfect for tasks you've started but haven't finished.

Partially complete tasks show a half-filled checkbox, making it easy to distinguish "started" from "untouched" tasks.

Can I manually reorder tasks?

Yes! Drag and drop tasks to reorder them within any list. Your manual ordering is preserved.

Your manual ordering is preserved across sessions.

Organization

How do tags work?

Tags are flexible labels you can add to any task. Use them for contexts (@home, @office, @errands), energy levels (#low-energy, #deep-work), or anything else.

Tags appear on tasks as colored pills. Click the Tags button in the sidebar to browse all your tags and see tasks grouped by tag.

What are Collections?

Collections are saved views that combine multiple filters. Think of them as "smart folders" that automatically show matching tasks.

For example, you could create a collection for "Errands this week" that shows tasks tagged @errands with a due date in the next seven days.

Where do completed tasks go?

Completed tasks move to the Logbook. It's a searchable archive organized by completion date.

You can browse your history, celebrate what you've accomplished, or recover accidentally completed tasks.

What's the Review feature?

The Review feature helps you do GTD-style weekly reviews. It walks you through your projects and areas, prompting you to check on progress and decide next actions.

Regular reviews keep your system trustworthy—nothing falls through the cracks.

What's the Forecast view?

Forecast shows a timeline view of upcoming tasks and events. It helps you see what's coming up over the next days and weeks.

Great for planning ahead and making sure you're not overcommitting.

Filtering & Search

How do I filter tasks?

Every view has filter buttons in the toolbar:

  • Filter by tag: Show only tasks with specific tags
  • Filter by area/project: Narrow to a specific project or area
  • Show flagged only: See just your high-priority items
  • Show overdue only: Focus on what's past due

Filters combine, so you can show "flagged tasks in Work area with @calls tag".

How does search work?

Press Cmd+K (or Ctrl+K) to open the command palette. Start typing to search across all tasks, projects, areas, and commands.

Search uses fuzzy matching, so you don't need exact text. Recent searches are remembered for quick access.

Can I filter by typing?

Yes! Just start typing in any list view to instantly filter visible tasks. It matches task titles and tags.

This is great for quickly finding a specific task when you know roughly what you're looking for.

Keyboard Shortcuts

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

Irkless is built for keyboard-first navigation. Key shortcuts include:

Navigation:

  • 1-6 Switch between main views
  • i Go to Inbox
  • t Go to Today
  • a Go to Anytime
  • s Go to Someday
  • w Go to Waiting For
  • d Go to Delegated

Actions:

  • N or Space Quick add new task
  • / or Cmd+K Global search
  • Backspace Delete selected tasks
What's the fastest way to add a task?

Press N or Space from anywhere to open quick capture. Type your task and hit Enter.

Tasks go to your Inbox by default, ready to be processed later. This lets you capture thoughts without breaking your flow.

Can I select multiple tasks?

Yes! Click to select a task, then Shift+Click to select a range, or Cmd+Click (Ctrl+Click) to add individual tasks to your selection.

With multiple tasks selected, you can drag them together or delete them with Backspace.

Privacy & Data

Is my data private?

Yes. We don't read your tasks, sell your data, or train AI on your stuff.

Your tasks are stored securely and encrypted in transit (HTTPS). We only look at your data if you explicitly ask for support help.

We make money from subscriptions, not surveillance.

Can I export my data?

Yes! Go to Settings → Export Data to download all your tasks, projects, and areas.

Your data is yours—you can take it with you anytime.

Does Irkless need an internet connection?

Yes, but you won't notice it much. Irkless stores your data locally, so the interface stays fast and responsive—most actions happen against local data rather than waiting for a round-trip to the server.

This means slow or intermittent connections won't get in your way. Changes sync in the background, and you'll see a sync indicator showing the current status.

What happens to my data if Irkless shuts down?

Fair question. We've made a commitment we call The Irkless Promise:

If Irkless ever needs to shut down, we commit to:

  • Minimum 60 days notice to export your data and find an alternative
  • Full export capabilities so you can take everything with you
  • Open-sourcing the full Irkless codebase so you (or anyone) can host your own installation

This commitment also forms a condition of any sale of Irkless to another company.

We're not going anywhere, but you should have these guarantees regardless.

Native Apps

Why is Irkless web-first?

We're proudly web-first. The browser is the most universal platform—it works on every device, updates instantly, and doesn't require app store approval to ship improvements.

That said, we understand some people prefer native apps to fit better into their workflow. When we build native apps, we're committed to creating custom apps designed specifically for each platform—not generic cross-platform wrappers. A true macOS app should feel like a macOS app. Same for iOS, Windows, and Android.

This takes longer, but the result is worth it. We'll prioritise platforms based on demand from our users.

What's the status of native apps?

Here's where each member of the Irkless family stands:

Platform Status Timeline
Web App Available now
CLI Late development Q2 2026
macOS Early development Q4 2026
iOS Early development Q4 2026
Android Planned TBD
Windows Planned TBD
Tell me more about the CLI

The Irkless CLI lets you manage tasks directly from your terminal. Perfect for developers and keyboard-first users who live in the command line.

Quick-add tasks, check them off, browse your inbox—all without leaving your terminal. It syncs with the same Irkless account you use on the web.

What about PWA in the meantime?

While we build native apps, you can install Irkless as a Progressive Web App (PWA). It runs in its own window without browser chrome.

To install:

  • Chrome/Edge: Click the install icon in the address bar, or Menu → Install Irkless
  • Safari (Mac): File → Add to Dock
  • Mobile: Share → Add to Home Screen

Technical

What browsers does Irkless support?

Irkless works on all modern browsers:

  • Chrome/Edge (Chromium)
  • Firefox
  • Safari

We don't support Internet Explorer (it's dead anyway).

Can I use Irkless on my phone?

Irkless works in any modern browser, including on phones and tablets. However, the interface is designed and optimised for desktop use.

It's functional on mobile for quick captures or checking things off, but for a proper working session you'll want a larger screen. Native mobile apps are on the roadmap.

Is there a desktop app?

No native desktop app, but you can use Irkless in your browser or add it as a PWA (Progressive Web App) for a more app-like experience.

Modern browsers are really capable. The web version works great.

Do you have an API?

Not yet, but it's on the roadmap for power users who want to integrate with other tools.

How fast is Irkless?

Fast. Your data is stored locally, so most actions happen instantly without waiting for the server.

Can I share tasks with others?

No. Irkless is strictly for individual use.

We're not anti-collaboration—it's just not what we're building. Tools like Asana and Todoist do team stuff really well. We're focused on making the best personal task manager we can.

If you need shared tasks, check out our comparison page for alternatives.

Still have questions?

We're a small team and we actually read our emails. Seriously, just ask us stuff.
